About University of Maryland Baltimore County

The University of Maryland Baltimore County, more commonly referred to as simply UMBC, is a public research university, located in Baltimore County, MD, most of its campus being situated in Catonsville, which is a census-designated place, with a population of nearly 40 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census.

UMBC was established as a part of the University System of Maryland in 1966, being specialized in the natural sciences and engineering, also offering students a wide range of educational programs in the liberal arts and education. The Carnegie Foundation has classified the university as a Doctoral / Research-Extensive university, UMBC being in the top tier of research universities, nationally.

At the undergraduate level, the university offers 54 majors, 42 minors and 20 certificate programs in various fields of study, including in social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, economics and visual and performing arts, while at the graduate level, it offers 33 master’s degrees, 23 doctoral degrees and 20 graduate certificate programs, in education, engineering, information technology, life sciences, emergency health services and public policy, as well as a new gerontology Ph.D. program, which is one of only 6 such programs offered in the States, among others.

The athletic teams from the University of Maryland Baltimore County are known as the UMBC Retrievers, who compete in NCAA Division 1 as a part of the America East Conference, in 17 varsity sports, of which 8 are for men and 9 are for women. Perhaps their most notable wins are in men’s lacrosse, in which they have risen to prominence in recent years. In 2009, the men’s lacrosse team has reached the NCAA Tournament in each of the past 4 seasons, the basketball team also contributing to the university’s athletic fame, winning their 1st regular season American East Men’s Basketball title in 2007-08, qualifying for their first NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.
